Did you know the honeybee can count to four and has a concept of zero? The learning center within the brain of these fascinating creatures surpasses other insects. The honeybee is a social insect that helps to pollinate 1/3 of our food resources. The importance of maintaining the health of honeybees is critical to our own food supply and sustainability.

Beekeeping is one way we can help our pollinator friends remain healthy and flourish. But, maintaining bees is not for the faint of heart. There are many different ways we can aid honeybee health: planting native pollinator plants, delay in mowing, and alternate usage to pesticides. Beekeeping is not for everyone. However, if you are curious to learn what it takes to become a successful beekeeper, join us as we unveil some of the mysteries of the honeybee that make this creature so unique. We will review the benefits of beekeeping and the requirements needed for beekeeping (equipment, time, money, space, legalities, and physical strength). This workshop is led by Tiffany Ayres who has worked in the veterinary management field for more than 25 years. She is a member of the York County Beekeeping Association, Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association, Eastern Apicultural Society and the York Queen Bee Initiative Program.
