The Future of Art: An AI-Assisted Revolution

Entries can address any of the following:

  • How can artists use artificial intelligence to create art that challenges our perceptions of reality?
  • Using AI to create images or videos that are surreal or dreamlike.
  • Creating installations that use AI to distort or manipulate the environment in unexpected ways.
  • Using AI to create generative art that is constantly changing and evolving.

How can artists use artificial intelligence to create new forms of art or to enhance traditional art forms?

  • Using generative adversarial networks (GANs) to create new images or videos that are inspired by existing works of art.
  • Using natural language processing to generate poetry or prose.
  • Using computer vision to create new forms of visual art, such as 3D models or augmented reality experiences.

Introduction to AI Algorithms and Platforms

Disclaimer: The Somerset Builder’s Club does not endorse any of the following platforms, nor is the following list meant to be exhaustive. The information below is meant to provide an introduction to getting started with technology which may not be familiar.

ANNs

Most algorithms used by AI artists are text-to-image generators. They take text prompts as input and produce images as outputs. They belong to a class of algorithms called “artificial neural networks” (ANNs). An image generation ANN can learn from millions of images paired with their captions to generate images based on text prompts.

Platforms

  • Stable Diffusion
  • DALL-E
  • Midjourney

NLPs

Another family of algorithms called “language models” can be used to generate literary works, such as GPT-3. GPT-3 is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) tool created using deep learning. Every open-source text available online has been entered into the GPT-3 algorithm, enabling it to analyze which letters, words, and phrases are the most likely to come after one another.

Platforms

  • ChatGPT

GANs

A Generative Adversarial Network, or GAN, is a type of neural network architecture for generative modeling. the generative model can then be used to create new plausible samples on demand

It consists of two neural networks:

Generator – This model uses a random noise matrix as input and tries to regenerate data as convincing as possible. Its goal is to generate realistic enough images to fool the discriminator network.

Discriminator – This model determines whether the input image is real or fake. It gives feedback if the image is predicted to be fake and the generator model uses that information to perform better in the next epoch.

If the training of the GAN model is going well then the Discriminator model will find it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and fake images, predicting the fake images as real as well leading to a lot of False Positives predictions.

Platforms

  • DCGAN – Generate Fake Human faces
  • CycleGAN – Image Style Transfer – Image Style Transfer is a task that takes two images, namely content & reference as input, and results in a composition combining the objects of the content image in the style of the reference image. By style, we mean the brush strokes, colors, textures of the reference image.

Augmented Reality Artwork

Viewers can use a mobile app to experience augmented reality art installations that may or may not include moving parts, sound, or other changes they can make themselves. The AR artworks may be brand-new creations, faithful reproductions of classics, or reworked classics given new meaning. They manifest as works of art in 3D space at predetermined locations or wherever the camera is pointed.

Augmented reality adds new dimensions of shape, motion, and significance to existing works of art or physical locations.

Platforms
